Remote Access A Mac With Chrome Remote Desktop

Google provides a very useful tool which can be used to remote into other devices like Chromebooks or computers with the Chrome browser installed. This can be used to access another personal device or to provide technical support on other devices.

The Chrome Remote App is used to remote into devices. This means we can access and control another computer from our computer. The remote app includes an option to remote into other Chromebooks for support and an option to setup personal devices like Mac and Windows computers for Remote Desktop access. Chrome Remote Desktop can only be used to remote into computers like Mac or Windows. It cannot be used to remote into Chromebooks.

The Chrome Remote App can be found and installed from the Chrome Store. Go to the Chrome web store and search for Chrome remote desktop.

The Chrome Remote Desktop app should be the first one in the results list.

Click the “Add to Chrome” button to begin the installation process.

Confirm the installation by clicking the “Add app” button.

The app will be installed and placed in the Launcher. Repeat the same process with other personal Chromebooks or computers with the Chrome browser.

Click the Chrome Remote Desktop app to begin.

A dialogue box will open with two remote options. The first option is the remote assistant. With this option, we can remote into another person’s computer and provide technical support or instructions. This option requires the person to grant permission each time we need to access the machine.

The “My Computers” option is the one used to setup personal devices for remote access. This process will setup devices once and they can be accessed at anytime from anywhere as long as the remote machine is on and connected to the Internet.

Click the “Get Started” button.

Information about setting up remote access will display in the dialogue box. Click the Enable Remote connections button.

Install the Chrome Remote Host Installer. Click the “Accept and Install” button for the license agreement to download the application.

The installer image file, for Mac, will download. The download progress will display in the download status bar.

A warning will display about the image installer. Click the keep button.

Open the image file by clicking the triangle next to the file name and selecting open.

Double click the package installer and follow the instructions.

Return to Chrome Remote Desktop and click the “Enable remote connections” button.

A prompt will request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to prevent anyone from accessing this computer without permission. Enter a PIN and click the OK button.

A prompt to enter the PIN we created earlier will open. This will authorize the computer to allow remote connections. We might need to click the lock icon to enable access to the computer. In this case, we will need to enter the computer administrator password.

Enter the PIN in the field box and click the Enable button.

Close the preferences dialogue box.

A message will inform us that remote connections for this computer have been enabled. Click the Ok button.

We can disable remote connections at any time by opening the Chrome Remote Desktop app and clicking the “Disable remote connections” button.

Repeat this process for other computers that will be accessed remotely.

Install the App on a Chromebook and open it. In the “My Computers” section, we’ll see the Mac we just configured for remote access. To access the computer, click the computer icon or name.

A prompt will open to provide the PIN we created earlier. Provide the PIN and click the Connect button.

The desktop for the computer we connected will open on the Chromebook in a window.

On the remote computer, we can open applications, documents and use any service available.

We can display the remote computer in full screen by clicking the full-screen button.

Disconnect from the remote computer by clicking the disconnect button.
